Photographer of the Week: W. Eugene Smith

Image
William Eugene Smith William Eugene Smith was born in 1918 in Wichita, Kansas. He took his first photographs at the age of 15 for two local newspapers. He actually entered the Notre Dame University where a special scholarship was made for him and then he went to New York a year later. He was there a while before he was fired for refusing to use a specific camera. This continued with many jobs as he was quite hard to work with.  Eugene Smith's "claim to fame" was his photo essays. They stood out because they had a strong sense of empathy and social conscience. He photographed civilians' reactions to whatever was happening and it would have a strong sense of truth in them. His photographs always had a purpose, and for the most part, it was to bring awareness to something. This is really ironic considering the fact that he was a colossal asshole who was very self-sabotaging and was very hard to work with. He had a difficult time with editors and he refused to allow any

About Me

Image
My name is Ashlee Luehring. I'm 18 years old and this is my first year at LBCC. My major is undecided at the moment but I'm taking more creative classes as Ive always been drawn the the arts. I would say this is one of my favorite photos because it was taken on my vacation in Kona, Hawaii this summer. I just loved the scenery.  I took this class because I've always loved photography and I thought it would be really interesting to see how photojournalism works. I had someone tell me that journalism/photojournalism would be something that I would be interested in. I've taken digital photography classes before in high school and really enjoyed it and I wanted to see what else I could learn. Goals:  I want to learn more about different angles and perspectives. I would love to learn about how I can make my photos more interesting and how I can catch people's eye. I would like to learn more about how photojournalism is different from regular photography.
